Mango Lassi

While growing up I haven’t tried any lassi, as it not popular in Kerala. There you can find moru vellam (diluted yogurt drink) spiced with green chili, ginger and curry leaves along with salt. They taste awesome when you coming from hot scorching sun. My grandma used to make it in large quantities; and whoever visit our house from around noon till 4.00 P.M. were offered a glass of moru vellam. I used take out all the green chilies, ginger and curry leaves and drink only the diluted yogurt part. Finally the day came to try lassi, I made this mango lassi.
Lassi is one of popular Punjabi (Punjab is a state in north India) yogurt based drink. Lassi is also famous outside India as most of the Indian restaurants have it on the menu. Lassi can be made spicy or sweet. You can use fruits and sweeteners for sweet version whereas crushed green chili, cumin, ginger etc account for spicy version. Over a period of time, I developed a taste for lassi, and it became one of my favorite drinks and I make it whenever I get fresh fruit.
Last week I bought two mangos from Fiesta grocery store, of which one was consumed as such. With rest of mango I want to try mango lassi. I don’t like to use mango pulp from Indian store as they are heavily loaded with sugar. I know my little one will enjoy it as it contains her favorite mango and yogurt. I made using single mango and 2/3 cup of yogurt (I used homemade), initially my plan was to add ½ tablespoon sugar. While cutting the mango my princess who was standing nearby wanted to taste some mango pieces, and I also tasted some. The mango was really sweet so I reduced the sugar to 1 teaspoon and flavored them with 3 cardamom pods. Trust me they taste awesome without any crushed ice or any more sweeteners. If you want more sweet feel free to add more sugar. Mely my blogger friend from “Mexico in My Kitchen” also asked me for the mango lassi recipe. Mango Lassi/Mango Yogurt Smoothie

Delicious mango yogurt traditional Indian drink with touch of cardamom
  • 1 Mango: 1 no
  • ⅔ cup Yogurt: ⅔ cup ( I used home made one)
  • Sugar: 1 teaspoon
  • 3 Cardamom pods
  1. Remove the skin and stone (central seed part) of mango and cut into big chunks and set aside.
  2. In a blender/food processor add cut mango pieces, yogurt, sugar and cardamom seeds (remove the skin and set aside and add it while making the tea it gives nice aroma) and blend until everything become a smooth consistency. I prefer slightly thicker version. If you need more diluted version you can either add milk or water.

    I could hardly wait till July to have our own mangos from my daughter’s trees to make this yummy and satisfiying mango lassi.

    Tell your hubby I really liked the photo he took, of the little green guest. These are the kind of photos I also like to take, that’s why I enjoy going to the zoo with my daughter, and the little grandkids!

    Hi Swathi! Oh, my sister in law introduced me to Mango Lassi when we went to have lovely Indian food with my brother’s family at a lovely restaurant in Pawtucket Rhode Island. I had never had it before, but since I love yogurt and Raita, I adored it! I never did get a good recipe for it, but your’s is so simple and lovely.
