Mocha Banana Dates Smoothie

This weekend was I was little busy as my prince turned 2 year on this Saturday, and we had a small party at our house.  I cooked a few dishes for the party, but bought a cake from Wal-Mart as I was not in a mood to bake one. He enjoyed his birthday and had a blast, running all over the place and playing with kids. Also last week when I was in dentist office for my daughter tooth extraction. As I was sitting in the Dr’s office glancing the magazines, I saw this recipe of Mocha banana dates smoothie in the Red book Magazine. The recipe looked interesting; and also was termed as skinny version in the book hence I decided to try it.

As I was looking at the ingredients I realized that my kids most likely would not drink it as it would most likely be slightly bitter from cocoa powder. So I changed recipe  slightly by adding dates to the smoothie, and also used instant coffee powder for left over coffee and instead of  almond butter(which I did not have  in my hand),  I substituted with 6 almonds which correspond to 1 tablespoon of almond butter according to this site. It is great one to start your breakfast or as evening snack. You can skip the dates if you don’t want additional sugar in your smoothie.

Normally I won’t keep frozen banana in my freezer, however my daughter’s favorite kids serial Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood has one episode where Daniel tiger and his mom make Banana Swirl Ice Cream using a frozen banana. So I had kept one banana frozen in my freezer used that for making this smoothie. I have to make her a banana swirl ice cream for which I have another frozen banana sitting in the freezer.

Make sure to soak dates for few hours in water, so that it won’t hurt the blender blade. Add frozen banana, instant coffee powder, water, milk, 6 almonds, 5 soaked dates and 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder and blend well, enjoy you will love it. I am 100% sure about that.

Mocha Banana Date Smoothie

  • 1 large frozen banana, cut into chunks
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ teaspoon instant coffee powder*
  • ½ cup 2% milk
  • 1 Tbsp cocoa powder, plus more for dusting
  • 6 almonds or 1 Tbsp almond butter
  • Chocolate-covered espresso beans, for garnish (optional)
  1. Place banana, ½ teaspoon instant coffee powder, water, milk, soaked dates, cocoa powder, and almonds in a blender and blend until smooth, about 1 minute.
  2. Pour smoothie into a glass. Dust with cocoa powder and top with a few crushed chocolate-covered espresso beans, if desired.

    hmm looks like everywhere ur seeing only recipes hahaha .This sound like a intresting smoothie.I tried the frozen banana ones and it was so cold that we couldnt take it as it is .How much time can we freeze the banana ,any ideas ?.ne more is like does the bananas blend well ?.Thanks for ur patience in ansering my questions swathi .By the way belated wishes to smart boy .

      Yes I am crazy about recipes he hehe. You can bring the frozen banana to room temp for 5 minutes and then blend it that way it won’t feel that cold. Thanks for the birthday wishes.
