As Navarathri celebration is going on these days, we went to temple on Saturday. I have been going to the temple with the kids for the Navaratri for last 3 years. Kids enjoyed going to temple, and my daughter wants to go more often. It was nice weekend. I planned to make a few dishes, however was able to finish only two. One of the recipes was the pomegranate juice Spritzer /Sharab Rumman. I found it in the book which I borrowed from the library.
This pomegranate juice spritzer/ Sharab Rumman is easy to put together. I got hooked as soon as saw the picture of it in the book The Arabian Nights Cookbook: From Lamb Kebabs to Baba Ghanouj, Delicious Homestyle Arabian Cooking by Haeeb Salloum. In the book he mentioned that pomegranate is important part of Arabic Cuisine, also a popular drink in Saudi Arabia. If you want to make original Sharab Rumman you need pomegranate syrup which is really hard to find in the US except in the Middle Eastern stores. May be next time I will look for that. This time I followed the recipe except increasing the amount of ground cloves in the juice recipe. It is delicious even without any sugar.
Initially I thought of adding sugar but kept that part aside as want to give to hubby who is diabetic. But when I drank the juice spritzer without sugar it taste delicious. Then thought why I need to add sugar. The combo of pomegranate juice and cloves give the kick to the drink, orange blossom water gives a pleasant aroma. While fizz is given the club soda, on the whole it is delicious and colorful drink.
Pomegranate itself is healthy fruit, and is a native of Persia (Modern day Iran). It is the most powerful anti-oxidant property of all fruits, has potent anti-cancer and immune supporting effects; it can help to reduce heart attacks, strokes and embolic disease. It can also lowers cholesterol and reduce other cardiac risk factors, lower blood pressure and shown to promote reversal of atherosclerotic plaque in human studies. It also helps or relives depression and osteoporosis. Read more from here. Yes juice from fresh pomegranate will be always better, but it is little tedious process, so we can satisfy with POM juice from the store, that is what I did.
Next time during grocery shopping grab a POM (Pomegranate Juice) and club soda, then add some orange blossom water, ground cloves and ice. Enjoy with or without sweetener of choice.
