Weather is getting colder and always a good soup is a great choice. I make my usual soups like,Beet carrot ginger soup corn potage, Creamy tomato and roasted bell pepper soup . When I review any cook book I like to try recipes to get a feel of it, if not I think I am not doing any justice to the review, and I have seen quite a few people just write something .This simple vegetable potage recipe is from a cookbook too.
I like the title of this book French country cooking Meals and moments from a village in the vineyards by Mimi Thorisson.
In this cook book author explains her life in beautiful French country side and lot of recipes. It’s a beautiful book both in writing and in photography. And if you’re adventurous, in cooking or in eating, I think you’ll enjoy the recipes as well. Most of the recipes with unique ingredients that you need to find a French market, which I find difficult.
There are 10 chapters in the booking excluding prologue and epilogue. Chapter Gouter has, 9 recipes, with everyday pear cake, Far Breton, Gateau Breton, apple pancakes, brioche, beignets with apricot filling . I would like to try beignets with apricot filling.
The drink recipes include Hudson’s Bellini, Matt’s Negroni, Rhubrab and raspberry cordial.
I like the starter recipes, which include soup like, tomato gazpacho, lobster bisque, simple vegetable potage which I tried, Vicnyssoise is in my do list. Then rest of starter include, potato croquettes with bayonne ham, Pumpkin quiche with bacon, white asparagus soufflé , wild mushrooms with egg yolk are few.
Main courses include, poulet chasseur, chicken Marengo, roast duck with cheeries, forest pie, black pig pork chops, monfish stew with saffron. Turbot with vin Jaune sauce, crab feuillete are few.
Then next chapter is about Sunday suppers in family which has roast chicken with chestnuts and cabbage. Poule-au-pot, old-fashioned summer veal roast. Pork Shoulder grilled with grapevine branches. Cod brandade, Mussels stuffed with sausage in tomato sauce.
Continuing, staff meals, croquet-madame, tomatoes farcies, endives with ham and marinara sauce is few.
Then next chapter is about sides, beet salad with crème fraiche, roast eggplant with pine nuts and raisins, garlic potato chips, dauphine potatoes, mashed potatoes with fennel, aioli sauce with new potatoes, chestnut bread and pain d’ epics etc.
Then last chapter is about desserts, baked pear with chocolate I tried it, I think they are good when it is warm once it cold it is not that tasty. There are the various recipes including vanilla rice pudding with salted butter caramel sauce, salted butter chocolate cake, plum pain perdu, baba au rhum, baked apples with speculoos, strawberry tart, and cheery stew. Orange blossom cake, chocolate ice cream , chocolate ice cream to name a few.
Pros of this book are with beautiful pictures and are more of a lifestyle book than a cook book. Cons included author has concentrated more into the pictures and setting rather than recipes. I would like to see more traditional French recipes.
I tried simple vegetable potage recipe from the book, they turned out tasty since I am ran out of tomato paste I used fresh tomato. You can skip with tomato paste. Here comes the recipe.
