Another onam is here, we are going to celebrate onam on September 7th Sunday. I am happy that it is coming on Sunday as hubby will be here and we can have a very nice ona sadya. I haven’t started any preparation yet. May from tomorrow I will start making.
Traditionally onam is celebrated 3 days in earlier days, onam onam ( first onam) rendam onam/ Thriuvonam( second onam) and moonam onam( 3rd onam) . Nowadays only second day onam is celebrated with enthusiasm. First thing usually make is pickles, sarakara varatti, I am still struggling perfect the recipe. May be this time I will have some luck. For onam, entire houses are cleaned and rangoli or flower art is made in the front of the house to welcome the king Mahabali and Trikkara appan. Legend is the King Mahabali who was pushed down to under the earth comes out and visit his disciples on Thiruvonam day. He is welcomed buy scrumptious vegetarian lunches with more than 20 dishes are served in particular order.
Even though onam celebrated in all over Kerala, the recipes vary from region to regions. Heat level and sourness increase as the recipe travels from North Kerala to south; once it reaches south it will be hotter. Thoran (stirfry) in south becomes varavu in north. Kozhikode palada pradhan and parippu pradhaman must. In south Trivandrum side, ada pradhaman is must. Curries too vary a lot still the sprit remains same that is fun of onam. I always get nostalgic when I think about onam. Here come my tested and tried recipes from my kitchen.
