Delicious and simple boiled corn salad or corn chaat made at home with corn, tomato, onion, chaat masala, roasted cumin powder and other spicesWe love corn and usually I make soup with it; and sometimes I roast them in stove top or grill. But I rarely boil the corn. Finally, I decided to try this corn chat/ corn salad one of the common street food of India. Chaat is common snack or salad which can be a lighten meal too.
What is Chaat ?
It is one of the common street foods which originated in Uttar Pradesh, India. It has been widely popular across India and other countries. According to legends, it is believed that chaat originated in the royal kitchen of the great emperor Shah Jahan. One time he fell ill, and the Shahi Hakim instructed him to strengthen his immunity by consuming food which is loaded with spice but light on the stomach. Hence, the famous chaat was discovered. However, Chaat is not a common item in Southern part of India while I was growing up, although now it is available in every corner of Indian streets.
If Pani puri is king of chaat, then bhel puri and Sev puri become the queen and this corn chaat become the prince in that list which is nothing less. It also has its own variation and deliciousness.
Chaat means to lick, which I assume comes from the fact that the spices linger on your taste buds .The most important ingredient in chaat is the masala—a nice union of amchoor (mango powder), kala namak (black salt), cumin, dried ginger, coriander, black pepper, red chili, and salt.
Spice combo varies according to street vendor, still there will be chaat masala and kala namak (black salt will be there)
How I made this Corn Chaat?
First you need to boil the corn then and remove the corn kernels from the cob add, onion, tomato spices, like black pepper, chaat masala, roasted cumin, red chili powder, lemon juice etc. along with little salt. Then finally add cilantro to make it tastier.
I always think that this corn chaat may be distant cousin of Mexican boiled corn treat where they use chili powder and cheese, here it is taken over by the spices and veggies but concept is almost same.
Here comes the recipe of corn chaat.
