If you like Tequila like me then you will like this delicious Paloma too. I am trying both traditional version and fresh grapefruit version. Paloma is traditionally made by mixing Tequila, lime juice and a grapefruit-flavored soda such as Fresca, Squirt, or Jarritos and served on the rocks with a lime wedge. Adding salt to the rim of the glass is also an option. There is another version that is made with fresh grapefruit juice and soda and Tequila. Thus, this Paloma can be made in two different ways.
What is Tequila based Cocktail?
Tequila is mainly used in classic Margarita cocktails. Then there are other tequila-based cocktails too.
Eau de Lavender: A classic, herbal, and citrusy cocktail made with Lavender bitters, tequila, egg white, honey syrup, lemon juice
Tequila Mockingbird: Watermelon based tequila cocktail with touch of Jalapeno.
Black Betty: The Black Betty made with Tequila, Homemade black sesame orgeat, crème de cassis and lime juice and egg white. Topped with beet sugar.
Mayahuel is another version Margarita made with Mezcal, triple sec and lime juice.
Paloma: Traditionally it is made with grapefruit soda, Tequila, and flash of lime juice. Or you can make with fresh grapefruit juice, soda, and Tequila.
What is Paloma and are what are variations?
The paloma, also known as "the working man's drink", is a Tequila-based cocktail. Best part is that the paloma is a thirst-quenching Tequila cocktail that is quite easy to mix up. If you mix with tequila and lime juice and grapefruit soda, then you get traditional paloma which you get it in Mexican bars. A favorite drink from Mexico, it is equally popular worldwide and one of the best ways to show off a great Tequila. Paloma is the Spanish word for "dove," and it is a fitting name for this sparkling grapefruit drink.
Jarritos Toronja (Grapefruit) soda from Mexico is the exceptionally popular choice. Tequila is up to you too, but reposado is best. You can find this Mexican soda in the markets that sell international food or shop online.
If you do not want use pre-made grapefruit soda and want to incorporate the fresh grapefruit juice into the cocktail, then you add fresh fruit juice, club soda and Tequila. I think both are delicious, I prefer to go for the second one. It gives more fruit flavor along with color.
Points to remember
Use fresh fruit juice version if you are a fruity cocktail drinker as it is having flavors and colors looking in it.
If you are looking for traditional version go with Jarritos Toronja (Grapefruit) soda or any other grapefruit soda.
You can also swap in mezcal for tequila, or go half and half for a little smokiness, which, added to that beautiful grapefruit bitterness, is kind of magic.
If you want, you can make the chili rim for the glass and only takes seconds to whip up. But it adds extra punch to drinking paloma. I tried both the fresh grapefruit version and the traditional version,
