Freda Smith from Gibsonburg Ohio created these cookies in 1957 and was the Bake-Off prize winner, yes it got third place.
It a soft peanut butter cookie rolled in granulated sugar and topped with a Hershey's Kiss, and it has been known as one of America’s favorite holiday cookies.
Traditional recipe uses shortening. However, there are other recipes with butter. And I have used butter here.
Ginger is not a traditional ingredient; but the combination of peanut and ginger is part of Thai curries.

How to make soft peanut butter blossoms cookies
You need following ingredients to
All-purpose flour : Use unbleached all-purpose flour
Baking soda : you need to check the freshness of baking soda.
Salt : If you are using salted butter then you can skip this.
Sugar : Add brown sugar in the dough while granulated sugar is for rolling the cookie.
Peanut butter: Creamy peanut butter is must for the recipe. Natural peanut butter made with just peanut and salt may not work here.
Butter : I used unsalted butter.
Egg : Egg function as binder in the cookie.
Ginger : Ginger boost the flavor of the peanut cookies and is base of Thai dishes. You can skip it if you do not want.
Vanilla extract : Adds flavor to the cookies.

Instructions
First mix in all dry ingredients flour, baking soda salt and ginger in a bowl.
In another one add butter , brown sugar, granulated sugar and cream. once it is creamed well add peanut butter and egg and mix well
To this add vanilla extract and finally mix in flour-mix.
once you form the dough chill dough at least 30 minutes. Then shape it into small balls and roll it in granulated sugar.
Bake it in oven at 350F once it is 75% baked, remove from the oven and press it in Hershey's kiss and return to oven and finish baking.
Once it is cooled well. enjoy.
Why are my peanut butter blossoms cookies flat?
If butter is too soft and flour is less, it can make the cookies flat. Adding few tablespoons of flour will correct this problem.
Why my peanut butter blossoms cookies are dry and crumbly?
Too much flour can make the cookies dry and crumbly. Adding 1-2 tablespoons of milk will help to solve this problem.
Why do I need to press down peanut blossom cookies?
Since Peanut butter cookie dough is denser than other cookie doughs you need to slightly press cookies before baking. As cookie dough balls flattens for more even baking. To cook the cookies evenly, when they are pressed before baking. This makes the cookies half cooked.
Can I use Peanut Butter Cups instead of Hershey’s Kiss in peanut butter blossom cookies?
Yes, you can. Traditionally Hershey’s Chocolate Kisses are part of the combination to make Peanut butter blossom cookies. You can make with peanut butter cups, truffles, marshmallows, and jam.
How long I can store my peanut butter blossom cookies at room temperature?
If you want to store at room temperature, they will be good for 5 days after baking.

- Serve: These cookies will stay fresh for 5 days at room temperature store it in an airtight container. If you want, you can add a piece of bread in the container with these cookies which makes cookies extra moist.
- Refrigerator: You can store the peanut blossom cookies in airtight container for up to two weeks. But their freshness can loose on time.
- Freezer: For long time storage, freeze these cookies once the cookies are cooled completely, and layer them in an airtight container. If you freeze them warm, the kisses may fall off when you defrost them. If this happens you can just use either peanut butter or melted chocolate to stick the kiss back on.
Tips to make best soft peanut butter blossoms cookies
Since peanut butter blossom cookies are classic cookies for Christmas cookie tray, you can make it more festive by rolling them in sparling sugar or any other red and green decorating sugar
Always use a cookie scoop your dough ball to get uniform size and shape. This will ensure uniform baking also.
Chill the dough at least 30 minutes to an hour.
Then shape the dough and roll it in sugar, place the kisses during the last 2 minutes of baking. This ensures proper firming up of cookies as it cools down.
You can make this cookies gluten free too by using gluten free flour, have the same taste and texture as the classic recipe!

Best Soft Peanut Butter Blossoms Cookies Recipe
Ingredients
- ¾ cups + 2 tbsp 117g all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter softened
- ¼ teaspoon ginger
- ¼ cup 50g dark brown sugar
- ½ cup 100g granulated sugar (divided)
- ¼ cup creamy peanut butter
- ½ of large egg room temperature
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 12 Hershey's Kisses unwrapped
Instructions
- In a large bowl add all purpose flour, baking powder, ginger and salt and mix well .
- In another bowl , beat butter, brown sugar, and ¼ cup granulated sugar until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add peanut butter and beat until combined.
- Add egg and vanilla and beat until combined. Reduce speed to low, add flour mixture in 2 additions, and mix until just combined. Cover bowl tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 350 F. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll dough into 1-inch balls . Roll them into ¼ cup granulated sugar and space them 2 inches apart on prepared sheets.
- Bake, 1 sheet at a time, until cookies are just set and beginning to crack, 9 to 11 minutes. Working quickly, remove sheet from oven and place 1 candy in center of each cookie, pressing down firmly.
- Return sheet back to the oven and bake until cookies are light golden, about 2 minutes longer. Let cookies cool on sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire rack. Let cookies cool completely before serving.
