Wishing you all Happy Pongal
Pongal is a four-days-long harvest festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu, a southern state of India. Because of my Tamil roots, we celebrate Pongal at home. Just like any other festival, pongal also has traditional recipes. Pongal is harvest festival which similar to Thanksgiving in US. This year it is on January 15th that is tomorrow. This festival is celebrated during month of Thai, during which the rice, lentils, sugar cane and turmeric are harvested. This month is also auspicious and lots of wedding takes place. This is not a surprise in a largely agricultural community - the riches gained from a good harvest form the economic basis for expensive family occasions like weddings. Here is collection of pongal recipes my kitchen.
I was born and brought up in a neighboring state Kerala, India, however my mom made pongal at home because our Tamil roots. Here are the most common recipes which Amma used to make at home.
