Delicious blueberry lemon limeade made with fresh berries and lemon and lime as well as homemade simple syrup. Great to beat the heat.
I love to buy fresh blueberry when I see them at the grocery store. I am not able pick them directly from the farm, but one day when my kids are old enough to understand and have fun, other than crying I will be visiting a farm and pluck bursting blueberries from the plant. For the time being I am happy with the grocery store ones. Here is delicious Blueberry Lemon-Limeade I made with them.
I usually transform them intofruit skewers, smoothie, muffins, pancake and coffee cake. I also have thought about making a cookie with it. Finally I decided to make something which I haven’t made yet.
In Kerala, we make a limeade/lemonade drink which we also call it Bonji/Naranga Vellam. This is usually prepared by crushing sliced lemon with fingers and mixing the juice with mild hot water or cold water; sugar or salt are added to the mixture. Some time soda (similar to club soda) is added. In my house my hubby is master chef in making this. Yes it required lot of preparation isn’t it?
While we were growing up, appa would always buy me and my sister, Naranga vellam, pineapple juice or Nonku (fruit of palm tree drink). While ordering he will give like this order “oru uppita naranga vellam (means One salt added lemonade) and rendu panchasaraita naranga vellam (two sugar added ones). We will wait in front of the shop in hot sun. When cool sugary lime juice arrives, it is like a cool breeze in the midst of hot sunny day.
But if you have blueberries, lemon and lime available what you will do? One way just put everything in the blender adds some simple syrup and mix with water and ice enjoy. That is what we did last Sunday. Then photo shoot session starts, my hubby tries the entire trick to get a neat picture. He had to move locations from kitchen to computer room and back. Finally we got one and it took about 30 minutes. He told me he lost the interest in the drink as it was sitting in front of him for too long. I told him, you have to drink it. I had made it this with less sugar. You can add little more may be 1-2 tablespoon more as it has lot of tanginess from both lemon and lime.
Here goes the recipe
First gather all the ingredients
Put blueberries, juice of lime, juice of lemon , simple syrup and water into the blender and blend everything well for about 3 minutes. Strain using a strainer and enjoy with ice.

Ingredients
- ⅔ cup Blueberries
- 4 cup Cold Water
- ¼ cup + 2 tablespoon Simple syrup Made by equal parts of Water and Sugar
- 1 lemon
- 1 lime
- Ice
Instructions
- In a medium bowl add Sugar and water and bring it boil. Switch off and your Simple syrup is ready
- In a bowl of blender add blueberries, simple syrup, 3 cup of water, juice one lemon and lime.
- Blend everything for 5 minutes, strain with a strainer.
- Add rest of water and Ice
- Enjoy
Notes
You can mint and lemon and lime zest to this drink.
