Coconut water is one of the best nature's drink is not only easy and delicious drink it is nutrient rich. You can cut open a coconut with help of hammer . Always choose young coconut get maximum coconut water.
For good amount and tasty coconut water you need to choose young coconut.
To get coconut water you need to break open thick outer covering and then hard shell.
We will watch the person climbing a long coconut tree without any assistance, with his only help being a string tied to his feet and a hatchet to cut the coconut and coconut leaves.
Usually coconut trees are harvested every 45 days and each would give fruits 15-20 years. I miss those tender coconuts, usually one in the supermarket are brown color husk ones are the end of the journey of coconut.
Health Benefits of Coconut Water
Tender coconuts are usually filled with water; coconut water is the endosperm of the coconut during its nuclear phase of development.
Later, the endosperm matures and deposits onto the coconut rind during the cellular phase. Coconut water contains sugar, dietary fiber, proteins, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and especially is rich in potassium.
If you are looking for health benefits, it is a well debated one; some says it helps lower the cholesterol.
Research studies have suggested that cytokinins (e.g., kinetin and trans-zeatin) in coconut water have significant anti-ageing, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-thrombotic effects.
Coconut water has excellent property of helping to beat dehydration.
Coconut water is composed of many naturally occurring bioactive enzymes such as acid phosphatase, catalase, RNA-polymerases etc. In effect, these enzymes help with digestion and metabolism.
Despite very light in consistency, coconut water has much better composition of minerals like calcium, iron, manganese, magnesium, and zinc than some of the fruits like oranges.
Coconut water is also a very good source of B-complex vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pyridoxine, and folates.
These vitamins are essential in the sense that the human body requires them from external sources to replenish. Coconut water contains a very good amount of electrolyte potassium.
Further, fresh coconut water has a small amount of vitamin-C (Ascorbic acid); and it provides about 2.4 mg or 4% of RDA. Vitamin C is a water-soluble ant-oxidant. Read more from here.
Is all the coconut water are good?
However, these goodness are only when you drink directly from a tender coconut, and not from the bottled ones in super market, they will be looks just any other drink with added sugar and pasteurized, here is excellent article and here about this discussion.
So just like any fruit, coconut water is nature’s gift for quenching our thirst. It also not heavily sweetened as a bottled drink. If you find a green tender coconut, try it for yourself, it is great alternative drink than any bottled beverages that I can assure you.

Hi Swathi very informative post. I love coconut water. Costco, Trader Joe's and some Indian store sell them. They are however from Thailand mostly, but they taste fine. It is so much fun just to go get some coconut water to drink in India though. My daughter and my nephews used to look forward to the trip to the coconut man.
